I’m sure we’ve all heard people say that eating late at night has a negative impact on your physique and some are even suggesting that you should stop eating past 8pm unless you want those calories to get stored as fat. But is there really any truth to this?
Absolutely not – at least not in my own experience. The truth of the matter is that constantly snacking can have a positive effect on your metabolism, even constantly snacking at night. Having a late night snack can also help you avoid waking up hungry, which can help you in your efforts to lose weight, if that is your goal.
So what’s the trick?
What I’ve found to work the best for me is to eat the right foods before I go to bed. If you’re eating things like candy bars, potato chips and doughnuts before you go to bed then you’re definitely not on the path
to losing weight.
I’ve come to realize that nutrition should be looked upon as a first priority, no matter what time of day it is. I always make sure I’m eating things like fibrous vegetables, protein, healthy fats and good sources of carbs at all times of the day, including before bed. The only real problem I see with late night snacking is that you’re not going to be doing much afterwards – you’ll be sleeping.
So what’s the golden rule for eating before bed? Smaller portions. Remember, your body is going to be going several hours without burning many calories, so I recommend not consuming a huge meal before going to bed – get a majority of your calories in the daytime when your metabolism is more active.

Another thing I do is consume foods high in the amino acid tryptophan. This compound helps your body produce more serotonin, putting you in a relaxed state and making it easier for you to fall asleep. Some great examples of these foods include oatmeal, honey, meat and poultry.
